Subtotality
Shadow bands are (hence the name) thin bands of shadows that run across the ground during a very short period of time immediately preceding and following a total solar eclipse. Their strength and stability rely on a number of factors, such as seeing conditions (atmospheric turbulence), visibility (clouds), ground proximity to the path of totality, light pollution, ground texture, time, etc. They are most visible and stable in the seconds leading up to and following totality, when only the slightest sliver of light is peeking out from behind the moon. As this sliver grows, the bands become increasingly disorganized and faint until they disappear. In the moment of totality, they are not visible.
